The incident began when an officer observed a vehicle driving erratically on a major route, leading to a traffic stop on a suburban street. Upon interaction, the driver, a woman in her 40s, displayed slurred speech and appeared disoriented regarding the stop's purpose, mentioning she was driving a borrowed vehicle. Recognizing potential intoxication, the officer called for supervisory assistance, and additional units arrived, also noting damage to the vehicle's front bumper. The officers then initiated a series of field sobriety exercises, commencing with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this initial assessment, the driver struggled significantly to perform the required eye movements, showing clear signs of impairment such as a lack of smooth pursuit and sustained nystagmus.
