Just after 5:00 p.m. on April 15, 2026, San Diego Police dispatch received reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in progress near 16th Street and Island Avenue. Officer Grijalva arrived on scene and observed a woman, later identified as 32-year-old Denise Christy Guzman, approaching city workers while holding an object in her hand. Believing the object to be a pick, Officer Grijalva repeatedly ordered Guzman to "Drop the pick." According to police, Guzman then ran toward a man in the street while continuing to hold the object. Despite multiple commands to stop and drop it, she allegedly continued advancing toward the potential victim. Officer Grijalva then discharged his service weapon, striking Guzman twice in the chest. Officers reported that Guzman showed no immediate reaction to being shot. As additional officers arrived, it was determined that the object she was holding was actually a red pen. Officers continued issuing commands for her to drop the pen. Guzman then allegedly turned her attention toward Officer Grijalva and began advancing toward him while holding the pen in a threatening manner. A supervising sergeant drove his patrol vehicle toward Guzman in an attempt to stop her advance. As Guzman redirected her attention, Officer Grijalva transitioned from his firearm to his Taser. Multiple officers deployed their Tasers, causing Guzman to fall to the ground. Following additional Taser deployments, officers were able to take her into custody. Officers provided medical aid until San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel arrived. Guzman was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office has charged Guzman with Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Exhibiting a Weapon to Law Enforcement, and Resisting Arrest. No officers were injured during the incident. Disclaimer: This video is presented for educational, documentary, and informational purposes only.
