An officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was working off duty at Publix Grocery Store when a store manager advised the officer that the suspect, later identified as 39 year old Twanda, left the store without paying for her groceries. Upon making contact, Tawanda refused to identify herself or provide the officer with a receipt. In the end, the officer was able to confirm that Twanda did purchase the groceries and charged her with resisting arrest without violence. Her charges were later dropped, and she filed a lawsuit against Publix, seeking damages in excess of $50,000 for physical harm and mental trauma. The case was later dismissed and the sheriff's office’s internal audit determined that the arresting officer had probable cause and the use of force was justified.
