It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Palisades Park Police officers Michael Bruno, Chang Han, and Theodore Christolias were finishing another call. They were on East Palisades Boulevard around 9:56 PM on October 27, 2024. Patrolman Christolias started crossing the road. He needed to get back into his patrol car. A white 2020 Hyundai Tucson suddenly swerved over the double yellow lines. It almost hit him. He quickly entered his police car. He then started a traffic stop. The stop occurred at 7th Street and East Palisades Boulevard. He approached the Hyundai's driver. The driver was Jay Lee, age 26. Patrolman Christolias smelled alcohol on Jay. He also saw signs that Jay was not sober. Jay claimed she had not drunk any alcohol. Because he suspected impairment, he asked Jay to exit the car. She then performed some sobriety tests. Patrolman Christolias began with the eye test. He watched Jay’s eyes closely. Her eyes did not move smoothly. They jerked back and forth at the furthest point. They also started jerking before the 45-degree mark. Next, Jay tried the Walk and Turn test. Jay did not step heel-to-toe. She also took the wrong number of steps. Her turn was also incorrect. The final test was the One Leg Stand. Jay could not hold her foot up properly. She dropped it before the test finished. Due to these signs of impairment, the alcohol smell, and failing the tests, Jay was arrested. She was charged with driving under the influence. John’s Law required her car to be held for 12 hours. Patrolman Christolias first took her to Leonia Police. There, she was processed further. She read and signed a statement agreeing to breath tests. After twenty minutes of watching her, she gave breath samples. The Alcotest showed her blood alcohol content was 0.12%. This is over the legal limit of 0.08%. After the Alcotest, she was driven back to Palisades Park Police. Her processing continued there. Once finished and given her tickets, Jay was released. Her friend picked her up. She signed a document accepting potential legal responsibility. This was pending her court date. Patrolman Christolias gave Jay several tickets. These included operating under the influence. He also cited her for careless driving. Additional tickets were for failing to yield to a pedestrian. He also cited her for driving an unregistered vehicle. Finally, she was ticketed for improper lane use. Court records show Jay was found guilty on March 6, 2025. She was convicted of driving under the influence. Her careless driving ticket was reduced. It became failure to obey a traffic signal. Jay had to use an ignition interlock device for three months. She also spent 12 hours at an alcohol education center. Her total fines came to $930.
