According to troopers, the driver was observed driving well over 100 miles per hour, at one point reportedly reaching nearly 115 mph. Officers say they attempted to catch up in an unmarked vehicle, but the driver continued at a high rate of speed before striking another car. In body camera footage, the driver tells officers he was in a hurry because it was his granddaughter’s birthday. When asked if he needed medical assistance, he declined and stated he was not experiencing a medical emergency. Troopers questioned whether distraction or another factor contributed to the crash, but the driver denied looking at his phone. An investigating trooper later informed the driver that he would be issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving. He was given a court date in Westport.
