Patrolman James Wrightington spotted a 2012 Lexus turning onto Ward Avenue from Hartshorne Lane. The vehicle passed him from the Holy Cross parking lot, and he began following it on Ward Avenue. He saw the driver fail to signal at the stop sign near Rumson Road and then stop in the middle of Ward Avenue, splitting the lanes. The driver turned left onto Rumson Road eastbound. As the car neared the Sea Bright Bridge, the officer saw it swerving across the double yellow line. Wrightington activated his emergency lights and pulled the vehicle over before the bridge. He approached the driver, who was later identified as Melissa. During the talk, the officer detected the smell of alcohol on her breath. Melissa said she was on her way home but denied drinking earlier that night. The officer became suspicious and asked Melissa to step out of the car to do field sobriety tests. Another officer, Patrolman Camilleri, arrived to help, along with Patrolman Manning from Sea Bright Police, to administer the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. First, Melissa tried to recite the alphabet but couldn't do it properly. Next was the One Leg Stand. During this test, she failed to lift her foot correctly and put it down before the test finished. The third test was Walk and Turn. She didn’t touch heel-to-toe and turned improperly. The last was the HGN test. Patrolman Manning saw signs of impairment. After finishing the tests, Melissa admitted she had one drink that night. Because of her reckless driving, the smell of alcohol, and her poor performance on the tests, Patrolman Wrightington arrested Melissa for driving under the influence. Her car was impounded for 12 hours under John’s Law. She was taken to the Rumson Police Station for booking. At the station, Melissa was read the standard statement for drivers but refused to give breath samples. Her boyfriend signed a form allowing her to be released, and she waited to go to court. Wrightington issued her tickets for DUI, refusing a breath sample, failing to signal properly, and staying in her lane. Records show that on September 11, 2024, Melissa pleaded guilty to DUI. She spent 12 hours at an alcohol education center, installed an ignition interlock device for three months, and paid $690 in fines. The other three tickets were dropped as part of her plea. 0:50 not just "failure to use turn signal," 5:25 you can have this back - okay… 11:30 did some dude just stroll through the DUI investigation? 16:50 what does he say? He said she failed every test. 32:03 the eye. Not a happy camper handcuffed to the bench. 34:12 an extra jacket so no one can say they’re too cold! 34:44 how 'bout behind the wheel?
