A 911 call Friday morning about people stripping a car ended with deputies exchanging gunfire with a man, killing him, following a pursuit in the South Valley. Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales said during a briefing that no deputies were injured in the incident. The man has not been publicly identified. Gonzales said at least four deputies, including field deputies and members of the SWAT team, shot at the man in two separate exchanges of gunfire. “Several of our deputies did fire their weapons, as to how many exactly, we don’t know. It appears that there is possibly four at this time,” he said. “We will know more as the investigation takes its course.” Gonzales said deputies responded to a home in the 200 block of Saavedra SW, near Isleta and Bridge, for reports of a car being stripped for parts. He said there were several people at the home when deputies arrived and a man “by himself” in a vehicle rammed the deputy vehicles. Gonzales said deputies chased the man a mile up the road, to Arenal and Lopez, where they exchanged gunfire with the driver. At that point, he said, the man barricaded himself in the vehicle and the SWAT team was called to the scene. Gonzales said the SWAT team also got into a shootout with the man before they approached the vehicle and found the man dead inside. The sheriff said gauging the timeline of the incident is difficult. “That whole event could’ve lasted anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half,” Gonzales said.
