A routine check of a disabled vehicle quickly escalates when a driver's severe impairment becomes evident during a roadside interaction. Around 7:03 PM on May 21, 2023, an officer encountered a 2020 Toyota SUV with a flat tire on a residential road. Upon making contact, the officer observed the driver, a woman in her 40s, exhibiting slurred speech and detected a strong odor of alcohol. Despite her denial of impairment and refusal to provide her documents, the officer offered field sobriety exercises. During the balance tests, she visibly struggled, failing to follow instructions for the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and stumbling during the One Leg Stand test, which was ended after 21 seconds. Based on her performance and the officer's observations, she was arrested for driving under the influence. Her breath samples later revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.332%, more than four times the legal limit, leading to multiple summonses including operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
