Houston, TX – May 25, 2025 While working a security detail at a business on the 5000 block of Westheimer, three off-duty Houston Police Department personnel — a sergeant and two officers — were alerted to a blue Nissan Versa tied to a recent “jugging” theft. When the officers located the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 42-year-old Maxie Ray Whitaker, attempted to flee by steering into oncoming traffic. The officers followed and managed to catch up when the car briefly stalled in traffic. As they tried to remove Whitaker from behind the wheel, he accelerated again, ramming another vehicle. The impact trapped the sergeant against Whitaker’s driver’s side door. Still trying to break free, Whitaker collided with a second car, worsening the situation and further pinning the sergeant. At that moment, the sergeant opened fire, striking Whitaker multiple times. Despite his injuries, Whitaker drove across the median before the car came to rest on a sidewalk. Officers quickly administered aid until Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Whitaker to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The injured HPD sergeant, identified as Sgt. Marquez, was also hospitalized but is expected to recover. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer against Whitaker. ⚠️ Viewer discretion advised — contains police bodycam audio and gunfire. This bodycam recording captures a chaotic encounter that began on the street and quickly escalated. Officers ordered the driver to exit the vehicle after an alleged attempt to strike or run over a deputy. The situation devolved into gunfire; the suspect was shot and officers immediately worked to secure the scene and render first aid. The footage includes officer commands, radio traffic, calls for medics, and trauma care being administered on-scene. Watch the full clip to see how rapidly a routine stop can become a life-threatening incident and how officers coordinate under pressure. 💬 Keep comments respectful — did the officers act appropriately given what happened?
