On the night of January 2, 2025, Miami Beach police officers were dealing with a white SUV parked on 9th Street, just off Ocean Drive in South Beach, when Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley walked back toward it. Police said he argued with officers, tried to push past them and pushed one of them in the chest. Officers took him to the ground, struck him and used a Taser. His girlfriend was arrested for resisting an officer. Kerley is a three-time Olympic medalist: 100m silver at Tokyo 2020, 100m bronze at Paris 2024, and the 2022 world champion at 100 meters. WHAT HE WAS CHARGED WITH He was booked on battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct. At his first appearance the next morning, Judge Mindy Glazer found no probable cause for the disorderly conduct count and released him on his own recognizance on the Miami Beach charges. She said on the record that it looked like he had been beaten up pretty badly by the police. Miami Beach police said he had battered an officer. His attorneys called the charges false. The same day, he was served with two felony counts from a separate May 2024 complaint by his estranged wife: domestic battery by strangulation and a robbery count. He pleaded not guilty to everything. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT On January 15, 2026, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office dropped both cases. The domestic violence case was dismissed outright. The battery-on-an-officer case was dropped under an agreement in which Kerley completed a course. A spokesperson for the State Attorney's Office cited a lack of cooperation from the alleged victim. His attorney said the cases were dismissed for lack of evidence. Kerley wrote: "They put me through hell, but truth walked me home. Cases dismissed." In separate matters, a misdemeanor battery charge filed in Broward County in May 2025 was dropped in February 2026, and in March 2026 the Athletics Integrity Unit banned him for two years for whereabouts failures. He has denied wrongdoing in every case. FOOTAGE Body-worn camera video from the Miami Beach Police Department, recorded January 2 and 3, 2025, from multiple officers' cameras.
