Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: On December 30, 2023, at about 4:40 AM, Hoboken Police Officers Michael Straten and Anthony Ingraffia noticed a 2007 Kia driving the wrong way on 1st Street. The car was speeding and ran several red lights on Washington Street heading north. The officers turned on their emergency lights and eventually pulled the vehicle over on Washington Street, between 8th and 9th Streets. When they approached the car, they identified the driver as 23-year-old Courtney Wasilewski, who had a 23-year-old passenger with her. Officer Straten requested Courtney's license, registration, and insurance, but she informed him that she did not have her license. She first stated that she had finished her shift at Madd Hatter, a sports bar in Hoboken, but later claimed she worked at a different location. While speaking with her, the officers noticed a smell of alcohol and asked if she had been drinking. Courtney initially denied this but later admitted to having taken 2 shots earlier in the evening. Suspecting she might be impaired, they called for Officer Anthony Rutkowski to perform field sobriety tests. Officer Rutkowski began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noted there was no smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and that nystagmus began before reaching 45 degrees. Next, he conducted the Walk and Turn test. During this test, Courtney stepped off the line once and did not complete the heel-to-toe steps properly. Finally, in the One Leg Stand test, Courtney showed poor balance, placed her foot down three times, and failed to count in the correct order. Courtney was arrested for driving while drunk due to her unstable driving, the smell of alcohol, her own confession to drinking earlier that evening, and her failure to complete the field sobriety tests. Her car was taken and held for at least 12 hours in accordance with John’s Law. Officers Rutkowski and Ingraffia took Courtney to the Hoboken Police Department for additional processing. At the police station, Courtney was informed about the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to provide breath samples for testing. The results from her Alcotest showed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.14%, which is almost twice the legal limit of 0.08%. She was released to her mother around 7:20 AM, pending her court appearance, after her mother signed the Potential Liability Warning form for her. Officer Straten then issued Courtney several summonses, including operating under the influence, reckless driving, failing to obey a traffic signal, and not showing documents like her driver’s license.
