#news #police #arrest #cops Report: On 01/25/2022, Officer was called to assist the Gang Unit with a vehicle stop. Officer was told that the vehicle (2011 Ford Super Duty) made an improper turn when turning on to the Inner Loop. Officer was also advised that as the vehicle was traveling on the inner loop it was weaving in and out of traffic. The officer was able to catch to the vehicle. Officer was able to get behind the vehicle and activate my flashing blue lights as it was turning in to a dirt yard. The vehicle continued traveling for approximately one hundred yards along a dirt road and officer observed the driver exit the vehicle quickly and begin running towards a patch of woods. As the officer approached, he gave the driver a verbal command to "stop". The driver responded, "I cant stop" and continued running. Officer gave chase to the male and gave him multiple commands to "get on the ground" and to "stop" while pursuing him. The male made several comments that he could not go back to jail while he was running away. After chasing the male for several hundred yards through a patch of woods the male stopped and sat on the ground. As the officer approached the male the officer recognized the suspect. Officer knew the suspect had several active warrants for his arrest. The officer gave the suspect a verbal command to turn around, but he refused. Due to the nature in which the suspect fled and then gave up, the officer was concerned that he may try to run again or physically fight if the officer moved in or continued to give him verbal commands. The officer was also alone during this encounter and responding units would have difficulty finding me due to the lack of landmarks around my position in the woods. In an attempt to diminish this possibility, the officer moved in quickly and pushed his torso to the ground while spinning him on to his chest so that the suspect could secure his hands behind his back. Once the suspect had his chest on the ground the officer secured his hands behind his back in handcuffs. The officer notified central communications that the officer was in custody with the suspect. They confirmed that suspect warrants and stated that they were for probation violation and aggravated assault. The suspect was escorted back to my patrol car and then transported to the Athens Clarke County Jail. While the suspect was being escorted back to the patrol car, he fell to the ground multiple times and refused to walk. The officer was unable to carry the suspect and did not want to prevent any injuries to himself or the suspect. The grade in which we were walking was very steep and slippery. When the suspect fell a second time the officer gave the suspect multiple verbal commands to "get up" while he was lying on the ground but he refused. The officer grabbed the suspects wrist/hand and secured it in a manner to better control him and stood him on to his feet. Once the suspect was on his feet the officer placed his hands on to the suspects arms and guided him through the woods towards a responding Officer who assisted him bringing the suspect to my patrol car. Due to the suspect fleeing law enforcement on foot after being given multiple verbal commands to stop, he was also charged with obstruction.
