Watch the police bodycam footage detailing a tense law enforcement response at a Hampton Inn following an emergency 911 call. See the tactical team execute their entry and apprehension procedure. On February 23, 2022, Ashton Porter — a 45-year-old man from Alpharetta, Georgia — checked into a Hampton Inn in Pittsburg, California, and locked himself inside his fourth-floor room while in acute mental health crisis. His family came to the hotel and told police he needed help, not arrest. Crisis Intervention Officers and Contra Costa County mental health professionals were brought in to negotiate. For 12 hours, de-escalation was the plan. Then, around midnight — according to a federal lawsuit Porter filed in 2024 — Lieutenant Hatcher dismissed the mental health team and took over communications himself. Eight hours later, Porter walked out of room 412 holding a knife. Officer Ernesto Mejia fired twice. Porter survived. He faces five felony counts of assault on a peace officer. But the lawsuit alleges that Officer Mejia's account of what happened in that hallway — that Porter was "sprinting" at him with the knife — is contradicted by the body camera footage itself. This is the full case. The full standoff. The full contradiction. Footage: Pittsburgh Police Department — Critical Incident Video, March 2022 release. Public record.
