When Sgt. Preston attempted a routine stop, Lancaster chose to flee — a decision that instantly escalated the situation from a traffic citation to a dangerous, multi-unit pursuit. As the chase continued northbound, Trooper Terrell Pratt joined the pursuit and became the lead unit. Lancaster exited at Exit 35 at high speed, lost control, and slammed into a guardrail. The impact created a massive dust cloud that blocked visibility for approaching units. Trooper Pratt attempted to slow down, but visibility dropped to near zero. He avoided hitting another patrol vehicle but couldn’t avoid crashing into Lancaster’s disabled car on the roadway. The collision ended the pursuit. Lancaster was taken into custody without further struggle. During the vehicle inventory, troopers discovered a gym bag containing clothing and four unopened 12-oz Bud Light beers — notable because Lancaster was underage. Emergency crews treated him on scene for minor injuries. Trooper Pratt was also checked but didn’t require transport. Lancaster was transported to Troop E Headquarters and later booked into the Dub Brassell Detention Center. His charges include: Fleeing in a vehicle Creating substantial danger of death Speeding Reckless driving Not wearing a seat belt Possession of alcohol as a minor This incident shows how quickly a young driver’s decisions can turn a simple traffic stop into a life-threatening situation — for themselves, for officers, and for everyone on the road. It’s a reminder that one bad choice behind the wheel can lead to consequences that last far beyond the chase.
