On June 13, 2023, an FHP trooper was driving north on US-27 near Harvest Boulevard in Lake County, Florida. when he observed a gray Lexus traveling at a high speed of 90 miles per hour in the left travel lane. The trooper activated his radar, confirming the speed at 87 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. After conducting a traffic stop on the Lexus, which had a front-seat passenger, the trooper requested the driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. The driver, identified as Abdulrahman Gadah Sami, denied the speeding allegations and provided evasive answers about the out-of-state registration. Further investigation revealed that the Lexus's New York registration had expired over six months ago. The trooper informed Sami that the vehicle would be towed due to the significantly expired registration. Sami became argumentative, prompting the trooper to call for backup. During the wait for the tow truck, Sami directed offensive language and made derogatory remarks towards the troopers. Sami also attempted to seek assistance from passersby. Sami requested to speak with a supervisor, and the trooper assured them that the necessary contact information would be provided in writing. Once the tow truck arrived, the trooper issued Sami the traffic citations, including one for the speeding violation with a mandatory court date. Sami displayed resistance and intentionally made physical contact during the citation process. The trooper warned Sami about touching them. As the trooper attempted to handcuff Sami, they resisted, exiting the vehicle against instructions. With the assistance of another trooper, they managed to handcuff Sami after a struggle. Sami attempted to escape from the handcuffs but was warned about potential felony escape charges. Based on the incident, Sami has been charged with battery against a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest without violence, and failing to report a vehicle address change within the required timeframe.
