What should’ve been a simple traffic stop for an alleged headlight violation turned into a tense confrontation over constitutional rights. Sam Norway got pulled over by a Perry police officer. When the officer started asking questions, Sam made it clear he didn’t want to answer. Things got more heated once Sam started recording. He kept telling the officer he had the right to record the police, but the officer ordered him to put the phone away, said he was interfering with the investigation, ordered him out of the car, and told him he was being detained. Sam stood his ground on his First Amendment right to record and his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. He also questioned what he was actually required to hand over during a traffic stop. The Fourth Amendment came up too. The whole tone shifted when a supervising officer showed up. The supervisor stayed calmer, agreed that Sam could record, and helped de-escalate the situation. In the end, Sam wasn’t arrested. He got a warning, got his license and paperwork back, and was free to go. This bodycam and citizen video raises real questions about traffic stops, police authority, the right to record law enforcement, First Amendment audits, cop watch, constitutional rights, and knowing your rights during a police encounter in America. Was the officer just doing his job… or did a routine stop get unnecessarily confrontational? Watch the full encounter and decide for yourself.
