Around 1:02 AM on March 9, 2024, officers with the Lakewood Police Department were dispatched to a report a motor vehicle accident involving 3 vehicles on Detroit Avenue between Westwood Avenue and Lakeland Avenue. As Officer McCarthy arrived on scene, he observed that there was an accident involving a 2013 Honda CRV (driver’s car), 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, and 2015 Kia Optima near Merry Arts Pub & Grille. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as Mary. Mary was initially evaluated by first responders, but she declined further medical attention. As the officer was speaking with Mary, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed signs of impairment, so he asked her to perform field sobriety exercises. The first field sobriety exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and Officer McCarthy observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and Mary did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and took the incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Mary put her foot down multiple times and swayed while balancing. Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Mary was placed under arrest for OVI. She was placed in the patrol car and transported to the Lakewood Jail, where Patrolman Wilkins booked her in for OVI. At the LPD jail, Mary refused to submit breath samples so she was advised that her driving privileges were suspended. Mary was subsequently released to her mother and charged with the following offenses: OVI, failure to wear a seatbelt, and failure to control ----------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
