On July 13th in El Paso, Texas, police bodycam captured the fatal encounter with 30-year-old Xavier Guadalupe Hernandez on I-10 near Yarbrough. Officers responded after reports he was trying to jump from the interstate. When they tried to restrain him, Hernandez resisted, and a Taser was used. Bystanders even stepped in to help officers hold him down. Moments later, Hernandez became unresponsive. Officers performed CPR and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide caused by asphyxia from chest compression during restraint, with cocaine toxicity as a contributing factor. Police stress that “homicide” in this context is a medical term, not proof of a crime. The case is now under criminal investigation by El Paso PD and the Texas Rangers, with an internal review also underway.
