CASE UPDATE: The 75 year-old driver was cited for 5 violations, including DUI, Careless Driving, Reckless Driving, Failure to Produce a Driver's License, and Delaying Traffic. After being taken to the police station, she was picked up by her husband. The results of her breathalyzer test were never released. On July 6, 2023, she pled guilty to the DUI charge. DUI is not criminal in New Jersey, so no jail time is imposed. She was sentenced to pay a fine of $790.00. In addition, her license was revoked for an unspecified period of time and she was ordered to install an Interlock Device on her vehicle. The other 3 charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. On May 2, 2023, Verona police officers were called to a parking lot for a minor traffic accident. According to the man who had his car hit, he came back out to his vehicle to retrieve a water bottle, when discovered an elderly woman had hit his parked vehicle. The woman was clearly disorientated. When the police arrived, she was badly slurring her speech and was incoherent. She could not perform field sobriety tests, so she was arrested for DUI.
