An unarmed 20-year-old Crofton, Maryland man who was killed in a police shooting in January, punched an officer in the face and bit the officer's finger before he was shot, body-camera video released Tuesday shows. Police said Dyonta Quarles, Jr.'s mother called 911 around 4 a.m. on Jan. 30, saying she and her son were having a dispute and he would not let her leave a bedroom of her home. When officers arrived they found all the doors locked but, through the 911 dispatcher, she told the officers to break down the door. Officer found Quarles in an upstairs bedroom and ordered him to get on the floor. He initially complied but later got off the floor. Officers used Tasers on Quarles but they apparently had little effect. Quarles then proceeded to attack police officer J. Ricci, punching him in the face. The video shows Ricci falling on the floor but he gets up and subdues Quarles. As Ricci puts handcuffs on Quarles, he bites Ricci's finger drawing blood. Ricci then fatally shoots Quarles. Police said Ricci was severely injured by Quarles. Ricci suffered a brain injury when he was punched in the face, police said. In the video, Ricci can be heard screaming after he is bitten. "He bit my [expletive] finger off. Shoot him. Shoot him. Shoot this [expletive]. Shoot him," Ricci says in the video. The sound of a Taser can be heard as Ricci says this. Ricci then fires multiple rounds and Quarles' mother is heard screaming. The other officers advise Ricci to put his gun down and to breathe. Ricci appeared to be in extreme pain after the shooting. Ricci then tries to leave the room but falls over as he reaches a hallway. During the video, the body camera shows blood splashed on a wall. Quarles died at the scene. Ricci was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Office of the Attorney General said Ricci is a 3-year veteran of the Anne Arundel County Police Department. Ricci has a total of 11 years of law-enforcement experience. An investigation into the fatal shooting will continue. The attorney general's office generally releases body-camera video or dashboard-camera video within 14 days of an incident. However, the office said the release of the video was delayed to ensure witness interviews were not compromised.
