A routine offer of a ride quickly uncovers alarming signs of impairment in a driver attempting to operate a vehicle. A deputy was dispatched to a rural area following calls about a suspicious person walking along a state route. After locating and offering a ride to the individual, the deputy arrived at a residential property where he encountered a woman, identified as the first individual's girlfriend, exiting a Chevy Tahoe while holding a bowl of cereal. During the initial interaction, the deputy noted her unsteady gait and observed a distinct white powder residue in her nostrils, immediately raising suspicion of impairment. Despite her persistent denials of alcohol consumption, the officer initiated standardized field sobriety exercises to assess her condition given her attempt to operate a motor vehicle. The woman displayed significant difficulty across multiple tests. During the Modified Romberg Balance Test, she exhibited a circular sway and misjudged the time. The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test revealed a lack of smooth pursuit and sustained nystagmus. She was unable to walk a straight line or count steps during the Walk and Turn test, also making an improper turn. Finally, she nearly stumbled during the One Leg Stand test. Based on these observations and her inability to adequately perform the exercises, she was placed under arrest for physical control of a motor vehicle. Following her booking at the county jail, she admitted to having snorted Neurontin earlier, though she declined to submit to a chemical test for alcohol impairment.
