A traffic stop for extreme speeding rapidly transforms into a detailed investigation when officers detect signs of impairment during a roadside interaction. On a May evening, a patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling at 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, necessitating a coordinated stop by another unit. Upon making contact with the driver, officers immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver, who later disclosed she was pregnant, admitted to consuming two glasses of wine prior to driving. This admission, coupled with the observed odor, prompted the officers to request the driver undergo standardized field sobriety exercises to assess her level of impairment. The subsequent field sobriety tests revealed multiple indicators of impairment. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, all six indicators were observed. The Walk and Turn exercise showed the driver failing to maintain heel-to-toe steps, exhibiting significant staggering, and using her arms for balance. Similarly, in the One Leg Stand test, she struggled to raise her foot correctly and again used her arms to steady herself. Based on these consistent failures and her prior admission, officers determined there was sufficient probable cause for an arrest. Following the arrest for driving under the influence, the driver was transported to police headquarters. There, she was read her Miranda Rights and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. She consented to provide breath samples, which later confirmed a blood alcohol content of 0.14%. The individual was subsequently released to a family member after signing the necessary forms and was issued multiple summonses, including for operating under the influence, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to use lamps when required. This incident underscores the critical importance of impaired driving enforcement and the procedural steps involved in such investigations. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
