Humboldt Park, Chicago — March 9, 2026 Illinois State Police investigated a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway involving a white Mercedes that authorities later connected to 42-year-old Derek Jordan. No injuries were reported in the expressway incident, but Chicago Police began searching for the vehicle after receiving information linking it to the case. Several hours later, officers located the Mercedes in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and attempted an investigatory stop near North Homan Avenue. According to police and bodycam footage released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), Jordan refused to stop and drove away, leading officers on a brief pursuit through the area. During the chase, authorities say the Mercedes struck a pedestrian before becoming trapped in an alley after colliding near a CTA bus and several other vehicles. Officers surrounded the vehicle and repeatedly ordered Jordan to exit the car. Investigators allege that Jordan continued attempting to drive away by striking the CTA bus and an unmarked police vehicle while officers were positioned nearby. Moments later, an officer fired multiple shots through the passenger-side window, striking Jordan several times. Bodycam footage captured witnesses at the scene pleading with officers not to shoot as the confrontation unfolded. Police later recovered a firearm from inside the Mercedes, though officials have not stated that Jordan pointed or fired the weapon during the encounter. Jordan was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability continues to investigate the shooting. Attorneys representing Jordan's family contend that officers unnecessarily escalated the situation and failed to utilize de-escalation tactics before resorting to deadly force.
