Los Angeles, California — May 5, 2026. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to assist Narcotics Enforcement Detail officers after a wanted suspect was spotted in the area. According to police, 21-year-old Jason Vega fled when officers attempted to contact him, running onto the embankment of the eastbound 210 Freeway. He then crossed the freeway and allegedly attempted to carjack a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Officers again encountered Vega, who police say was armed with a handgun. Multiple commands were given for him to drop the weapon, but he reportedly refused to comply. An officer-involved shooting followed. After Vega fell to the ground, officers say he continued to disregard commands and moved toward the firearm. Officers then used an intermediate force option to gain compliance and took him into custody. Vega was transported to Olive View Medical Center, where he was treated and medically cleared for booking. Police recovered a Glock Model 22 handgun at the scene. Fortunately, no officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
