An officer’s initial observation of extreme speeding leads to a complex roadside encounter, revealing layers of personal circumstance and procedural inquiry. An officer initiated a traffic stop on May 8, 2022, after observing a vehicle traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, a dangerous speed that required another unit to intercept the car. Upon approaching the 2015 Toyota Camry, Patrolman Poon detected a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage from the 31-year-old driver, who subsequently admitted to consuming two glasses of wine and also disclosed she was pregnant. During this roadside interaction, the driver unexpectedly posed a philosophical question to the officer, inquiring about their four years on the job and whether their daily duties felt like a routine "check-off" instead of meaningful engagement. Despite this unusual line of questioning, standardized field sobriety exercises were administered by Patrolwoman Lippencott and Patrolman Poon, during which the driver displayed multiple clear indicators of impairment, including difficulty with balance, coordination, and nystagmus. Based on her traffic infractions, admission of alcohol consumption, and inability to adequately perform the sobriety tests, the driver was placed under arrest for operating under the influence, later providing breath samples that registered a 0.14% BAC, leading to multiple summonses for offenses including speeding, reckless driving, and DUI before her release to a family member. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
