Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: On the morning of October 27, 2023, at approximately 8:00 AM, Officer Thomas LaChance and Officer Justin Fuss, a trainee with the Lincoln Park Police Department, received a dispatch regarding a potential disabled vehicle near the intersection of Comly Road and Pleasant Avenue. Upon their arrival, they were informed by dispatch that the vehicle had apparently collided with a planter at a residence on Ryerson Road. The driver had purportedly attempted a right turn onto Pleasant Avenue. Officer LaChance promptly signaled the driver to halt the vehicle and engage the parking gear as he approached her. During the encounter, he observed that the vehicle's airbags had been deployed and there was significant front-end damage. The driver was later identified as 25-year-old Gabriela. Officer LaChance requested her to step out of the vehicle in order to gather more details about the incident. Gabriela confessed to colliding with a utility pole but denied hitting the planter on Ryerson Road, although there were remnants of green shrubbery on the front bumper, suggesting otherwise. While conversing with her, Officer LaChance detected the smell of alcohol, and Gabriela stated that she was traveling from her residence to her friend’s house in Lincoln Park. When questioned about alcohol consumption or substance use, Gabriela denied it. Due to Officer LaChance's suspicion of impairment, Gabriela was requested to participate in field sobriety exercises. During the evaluation, Officer LaChance administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. In conducting the HGN test, Officer LaChance noted the absence of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. Furthermore, vertical nystagmus was also detected. Subsequently, Gabriela participated in the Walk and Turn test, during which she failed to maintain heel-to-toe contact with each step, executed improper turns, and utilized her arms for stability. Lastly, during the One Leg Stand test, Gabriela was unable to raise her foot in the prescribed manner and failed to correctly count in the instructed sequence. Following the motor vehicle accident and Gabriela's display of impairment, along with her inability to successfully complete the field sobriety exercises, she was apprehended for driving under the influence. Subsequently, Officers Fuss and LaChance conveyed Gabriela to the Lincoln Park Police Department for further processing. As per John’s Law, her vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour period. Upon being presented with the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators by Officer LaChance at the Lincoln Park Police Department, the individual in question consented to providing breath samples for testing. The Alcotest revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.20%, double the legal limit of 0.08%. Following the processing and completion of police paperwork, the individual was released to a friend, who signed the Potential Liability Warning form on her behalf. Summonses were issued for the following offenses: Operating under the influence, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, failure to report an accident, and traffic violations on marked lanes.
