It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On April 24, 2022, at about 7:21 PM, the Athens-Clarke County Police received a call about a potential drunk driver at the Blind Pig Tavern. The caller mentioned seeing three individuals outside arguing over who would drive. One of them then drove off in a Volvo SUV, and the caller provided the license plate number. An officer nearby spotted a 2021 Volvo XC40 that matched the description given and decided to follow it to assess how it was being driven. The officer observed the Volvo swerving and failing to stay in its lane on more than eight occasions. As a result, he pulled the vehicle over and approached the driver, who was later identified as 31-year-old Melissa. Melissa informed the officer that she and her friends had just left a baby shower at the Blind Pig Tavern. At first, she insisted she hadn't drunk any alcohol, but later she changed her story and admitted that she had. The officer then called in another officer to conduct field sobriety tests, and Officer Haydn Asinas soon arrived. When Officer Asinas approached Melissa, he noticed the smell of alcohol and saw signs that suggested she was impaired. Because of these observations, Melissa was asked to take part in the sobriety tests, and she agreed. Officer Asinas began by administering the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noticed that there was no smooth movement of Melissa's eyes, and he saw clear signs of nystagmus when her eyes reached their farthest point. Additionally, her eyes showed signs of nystagmus even before they turned 45 degrees, and both eyes displayed vertical nystagmus. Next, he moved on to the Walk and Turn test. In this test, Melissa struggled; she could not keep her heel in contact with her toes on each step and did not turn correctly. The One Leg Stand was the third test, where she was expected to count but failed to do so and put her foot down before the exercise was over. The fourth test was the Lack of Convergence, followed by the Modified Romberg Balance Test. In this final test, Melissa successfully estimated a time of 30 seconds. According to the witness, Melissa was driving in a way that raised concerns. She admitted to drinking alcohol, and she struggled to complete the field sobriety tests. Because of this, Officer Asinas arrested her for driving under the influence. After the arrest, Melissa refused to provide breath or blood samples for testing and declined to answer any questions.
