A New Mexico State Police officer initiated a traffic stop after clocking a driver traveling at 93 miles per hour late at night. From the moment he approached the vehicle, something was off. The driver's eyes were red and the smell of alcohol was noticeable — so the officer wasted no time getting to work. The driver — calm, polite, and cooperative throughout — admitted to having two shots of tequila roughly an hour before the stop. She explained she had just left a club and was dropping her friends home. The officer proceeded to administer standard field sobriety tests, including the heel-to-toe walk and a single leg balance test. She performed both carefully and without obvious stumbling — but the officer had already seen enough. She was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of an intoxicating drug. In the state of New Mexico, there is no bail for a DWI — meaning she would have to wait and see a judge before being released, likely sometime the following morning. Her car was towed.
