A 911 caller reported a black Jeep traveling in the wrong direction. Three minutes later, at 4:03 AM, Sergeant Scott Herchick found a black 2021 Cherokee facing north in the southbound lane. The Jeep was not in park, and its driver was asleep at the wheel. Sergeant Herchick knocked on the window several times before she woke up. He told her to shift the vehicle into park, and she complied. The driver, later identified as Melissa, was asked for her license and registration. She had trouble finding the documents and showed signs of intoxication. When asked how much she had been drinking, she admitted she had "probably too much." She later said she had consumed several beers earlier that night. Patrolman James Lattoz arrived soon after to assist. Based on what they observed, officers asked Melissa to step out and perform roadside sobriety tests. Patrolman Lattoz began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Melissa then tried to walk in a straight line, placing one foot directly in front of the other. She raised her arms, missed the heel-to-toe steps, and took the wrong number of steps while returning. During the One Leg Stand, she failed to lift her foot correctly and put it down before the test ended. Officers gave her another chance, but she failed again. Melissa was arrested after officers found her asleep in the Jeep, smelled alcohol, and watched her struggle with the tests. Lieutenant Heather Glogolich of Morris Township searched her before placing her in a patrol car. The Jeep was towed and held for 12 hours under a law known as John's Law. Patrolman Lattoz then brought Melissa to the police station for further processing. At the station, Melissa read the standard rights given to drivers and agreed to take a breath test. The result was 0.22%, far above the legal limit of 0.08%. Afterward, police released her to her mother while she awaited court. She signed a warning about the possible legal consequences. Patrolman Lattoz issued citations for driving under the influence and careless driving. Court records show that the DUI charge was dismissed on January 4, 2024. Melissa was found guilty of careless driving. Her license was revoked for 30 days, and she paid $240 in fines. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
