On April 11, 2024 at approximately 1:17 AM, Officer James Holub with the Crystal Lake Police Department was on patrol in the area of Main Street and US Route 14. He observed the driver of a 2023 Ford F-150 swerving across lanes and apparently texting on SB Main Street as she approached US Route 14. He began following the vehicle and eventually initiated a traffic stop in the vicinity of James R. Rakow Road and Pyott Road. He made contact with the driver, who was later identified as Lauren Messer. As he was speaking with Lauren, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Lauren was unable to provide the officer with a valid proof of insurance. After Officer Holub arrived on scene to assist, Lauren was asked to exit the vehicle. Based on the officers’ suspicion of impairment, Lauren was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. She initially refused the field sobriety exercises and she was informed that she would be placed under arrest. After agreeing to perform the field sobriety exercises later, the handcuffs were removed so that she could perform the tests. Upon conclusion of the field sobriety tests, she was offered an opportunity to submit to a PBT, but she refused. She was then placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Lauren was transported by Officer Holub to the Crystal Lake Police Department for further processing. At the station, the Warning to Motorist form was read to her, but she refused to submit breath samples. Since she refused, Officer Holub sought a warrant for her blood. Once the warrant was issued, he transported Lauren to Mercy Health Hospital. Once her blood was drawn and the paperwork was completed at the hospital, Lauren was released pending her court appearance. Lauren was initially issued the following citations: -Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2)) -Use of Electronic Communication Device on a Roadway (625 ILCS 5/12-610.2) -Improper Lane Usage (625 ILCS 5/11-709) -Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle (625 ILCS 5/3-707(a)) When her blood test results later indicated that she was over the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of the blood draw, she was also cited for Driving under the influence - BAC 0.08 or more (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1)).
