It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 2:14 AM on June 14, 2024, Sergeant Richard Gill and Patrolmen Jordan Barham, Christopher Marlow, and Donald Picciano from the Westfield Police Department received a call about a car accident on West South Avenue. A 2024 Hyundai Elantra had crashed into a parked 2008 Nissan Rogue. When Patrolman Barham arrived, he saw that the Hyundai was heavily damaged in the front, and its airbags had deployed. The force of the collision pushed the Nissan Rogue about 20 feet from where it had been parked. Crystal Beverly was the driver, and she was clearly upset, shouting at the officers. Patrolman Barham noticed signs that she might be impaired. Despite Sergeant Gill’s many efforts to calm her down, Crystal struggled to answer the officers and kept acting aggressively. First, she hit Sergeant Gill with her phone, then threw it on the ground. He warned her, but she just kept yelling. Crystal kept shouting at the officers until she finally hit Sergeant Gill in the chest with her fist. As soon as that happened, Beverly was taken to the ground and handcuffed. After they placed Crystal in the police car, she told another officer that she had been at Hugo’s Lounge in Plainfield earlier that night and was on her way home to Elizabeth. She acknowledged that she had been drinking and smoking before getting behind the wheel. Due to her lack of cooperation, the officers did not conduct field sobriety tests. Patrolman Picciano took Crystal to the Westfield Police Department while other officers stayed behind to assess the crash damages. Her vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by John’s Law, and the Nissan Rogue was towed from the scene. At the police station, Lieutenant Maloney searched Crystal, and the Westfield Rescue Squad examined her. She expressed a desire to go to the hospital and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, NJ. Crystal received care at the hospital before being taken back to the Westfield Police Department. There, Sergeant Gill planned to request a subpoena for her medical records, focusing on blood tests and toxicology reports. Once she arrived at the station, officers read her the Miranda warnings and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. She agreed to provide breath samples for testing. The Alcotest showed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.02%. However, this test was done around 7:29 AM, more than five hours after the crash. Given the situation, a drug recognition expert (DRE) was called in. Officer Timothy Stasyshyn from the Mountainside Police Department arrived to assess the scene. He concluded that Crystal was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, making her unsafe to drive. After processing Crystal, she was released to a friend before her court date at the Westfield Municipal Court on June 26, 2024. Her friend signed the Potential Liability Warning for her. Crystal received several traffic citations: operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane. She received several criminal summonses. These include Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Obstructing the Administration of the Law, and Resisting Arrest. 6:55 sista go boom! 7:09 Even the cop whose POV we're looking through 8:00 minutes TOO LONG. 9:53 that red box with his cuff key though… 19:05 Despite her tantrums, she’s sober enough to lie 19:48 I'm happy she wasn't hurt, or anyone else.
