On April 15th, 2025, Pekin Police officers responded to a nursing facility after reports of a baby left alone inside a vehicle in the parking lot. Staff stated a visitor alerted them to a crying infant locked inside a car, prompting employees to rush outside and check on the child. According to police, the vehicle was unlocked, and staff removed the baby from the car after noticing signs of distress and a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside. Officers later identified the child’s mother, who was inside the facility attending an orientation. She told police she believed someone else was watching the child and was unaware the baby had been left alone in the vehicle. Officers took the child into protective custody and contacted DCFS. The mother was arrested for Endangering the Life or Health of a Child and transported to jail. Medical personnel evaluated the infant, and DCFS later assumed custody while determining placement.
