The officer identified the vehicle as stolen and attempted to approach and detain its four occupants, but the driver started the truck and began to drive away. The officer became trapped between the open door and the vehicle as it moved in reverse. During the struggle, the officer was able to pull the keys from the ignition, and the vehicle eventually stopped. At that point, the driver exited the vehicle and pulled a shotgun from between the seats. The officer then drew his department-issued firearm as the suspect threw the shotgun into the bed of the truck. The officer suffered minor injuries. In the search that followed, police also seized a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, and small amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl. All four occupants of the vehicle were arrested and have been charged with a variety of offences, including possession of stolen property, weapons offences, and drug-related charges. They were all remanded into custody and have since appeared in court.
