Around 12:08 AM on December 23, 2022, Officer Burgos of the Vineland Police Department responded to the site of a motor vehicle crash at S Orchard Road and W Chestnut Avenue. As he approached the driver of the 2016 Honda that had struck the pickup truck, he observed that she appeared to be under the influence. Officer Santos arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and took over the investigation. When he attempted to interview the driver, 23-year-old Edith Rodriguez, she told him that she was not fluent in English. Officer Santos radioed for a Spanish-speaking officer to come to the scene, and Officer Ramirez arrived at 12:27 AM. Edith admitted to Officer Ramirez that she had been drinking earlier that evening at a party. She did not have a license to drive, but her sister (Edith’s passenger) was able to provide a valid registration for the vehicle. Based on their suspicion of intoxication, the officers radioed for Officer Vasquez to come and perform the field sobriety exercises. The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise involved the Walk and Turn test, and Edith was unable to walk in a straight line or count her steps out loud. The third exercise involved reciting the alphabet, which Edith was unable to perform. The fourth test involved counting from 32 to 52 in Spanish, which she performed adequately. The final exercise involved the One Leg Stand test, and Edith was unable to maintain her position on one leg for 30 seconds. Based on her traffic infractions, erratic driving patterns, and her inability to adequately perform most of the field sobriety exercises, Officer Vasquez placed Edith under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was placed under arrest, Officer Santos searched her for contraband, and she was transported by Officer Burgos to Vineland Police Headquarters. At Police headquarters, she refused to provide a urine sample to test for the presence of marijuana. After Edith was processed, she was released with the following summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, failure to observe a traffic control device, and driving without a license. Court records indicated that she was represented by a public defender and found NOT GUILTY of driving under the influence and reckless driving on March 28, 2023. However, she was found GUILTY of driving without a license and failure to observe a traffic control device and fined a total of $330. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
