An officer's suspicion quickly confirmed during a late-night traffic stop, revealing a significant impairment beyond initial denials. Around 3:08 AM, a sergeant observed a 2012 Kia Forte driving without headlights and exhibiting erratic patterns, prompting a traffic stop. Upon making contact with the 25-year-old driver, Angela Amato, the officer immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle and noted her incoherent demeanor. Despite these clear indicators, the driver claimed to have consumed "nothing really," stating she had "one drink way earlier" after leaving a local bar. This discrepancy between her statement and observable condition heightened the officer's suspicion of impairment. To further assess her sobriety, the officer administered a series of standardized field sobriety exercises. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, the driver displayed clear signs of impairment, including a lack of smooth eye pursuit and distinct nystagmus. The One Leg Stand test proved challenging as she began prematurely, struggled with balance, and failed to maintain the proper foot position, even counting past the required number. Similarly, the Walk and Turn test revealed difficulties in walking heel-to-toe and maintaining the correct step count. The final test, reciting the alphabet, was performed by singing and dancing, directly contrary to instructions. Based on the combined evidence of erratic driving, inconsistent statements, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Following her arrest, she was transported to the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Department, where Alcotest results indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, which is double the legal limit. After processing, including mugshots and paperwork at police headquarters, she was released to a sober person who signed a potential liability waiver. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
