It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At midnight on November 23, 2023, Patrolman Nicholas Turi from the Sea Bright Police Department noticed a Nissan driving erratically on Ocean Avenue. He pulled the car over and asked the driver for her documents. The driver, named Esa, mentioned she was coming from Ocean House Tap and Grill. When Patrolman Turi inquired if she had been drinking, Esa admitted she had. To check her level of impairment, he asked her to recite the alphabet from A to Z, which she did without any issues. Afterward, Patrolman Turi went back to his vehicle to run her license and called for additional support. Patrolman Ty Manning arrived to help as Patrolman Turi asked Esa to step out of her car. Turi wanted her to do some sobriety tests. First, Patrolman Manning tried the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Esa had trouble with it because she wouldn’t keep her head still. Next, she attempted the Walk and Turn test. She failed to keep her heels and toes touching. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Esa couldn't lift her foot correctly and put it down before the test was finished. Manning tried the HGN test again, but he still couldn't get clear results. Due to her erratic driving, admission of drinking, and failure to complete the sobriety tests, Patrolman Turi arrested Esa for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was taken and held for 12 hours as required by John's Law. Esa was then taken to the Sea Bright Police Department for further processing. At the police headquarters, Patrolman Turi explained the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators to Esa. She agreed to provide breath samples for testing. Patrolman Manning used the Alcotest machine, which showed Esa had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04%. This is under the legal limit of 0.08%. Despite the low reading, Patrolman Turi informed Esa that she would be issued a citation for driving under the influence. This was due to her failure to perform the field sobriety tests properly. Esa was processed and released to a sober adult at 1:48 AM after signing the Potential Liability Warning form. Patrolman Turi gave Esa several summonses.
