A routine speeding stop quickly evolves as officers detect a distinct odor of alcohol, prompting an immediate safety investigation. On May 8, 2022, a patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, necessitating a coordinated stop by another officer. Upon approach, an officer detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle, escalating the interaction from a simple traffic infraction to a potential impairment investigation. The driver, a young adult woman with long dark brown wavy hair, was asked to exit the vehicle, where officers observed further signs of impairment and she admitted to consuming alcohol and being pregnant. She subsequently agreed to and performed standardized field sobriety exercises, displaying multiple indicators of impairment including staggering and raising her arms for balance during the Walk and Turn test. Based on these observations and her performance, she was arrested for driving under the influence. Subsequent processing revealed a BAC of 0.14%, leading to multiple summonses including speeding and reckless driving, before she was released to a guardian. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
