It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On November 30, 2023, at about 2:30 PM, Patrolman Michael O’Mealy from the Chester Township Police Department was called to a car accident. The incident involved a 2020 Volvo that had collided with a bridge over the Black River on Ironia Road. He arrived at the scene around 2:34 PM. Upon inspection, he saw that the passenger side tire of the Volvo had come off after the crash. The airbags had not deployed, and the only person in the car was still inside. He approached the driver, who was named Kira. Kira mentioned to Patrolman O’Mealy that she was distracted by her phone. She believed her license was suspended because of a past DWI. While talking to her, he noticed the smell of alcohol and other signs that she might be impaired. Patrolman Brian Lowry arrived to help at about 2:44 PM. Given her visible head injuries, the officers decided it wouldn’t be safe to perform field sobriety tests. After Kira was checked by the first responders, they told her she was under arrest. She would go to the hospital for more evaluations. In the ambulance, Kira agreed to a blood test and signed a consent form. At Morristown Medical Center, the blood draw took place. Following that, she was released to her husband until her court appearance in Chester Township Municipal Court. Her blood test showed a BAC of 0.373% during the blood draw, meaning her level might have been about five times over the legal limit of 0.08% when the crash happened. Patrolman O’Mealy gave her several tickets: operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, violating traffic lane rules, using a hand-held phone, driving with a suspended license, not having a driver registration, lacking an insurance card, driving without a license, having an open container, and drinking alcohol in the vehicle. On February 9, 2023, court records show that Kira had been arrested for another DWI in Boonton Township, New Jersey.
