It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On September 9, 2023, around 3:03 AM, Officer Jordan Shellabarger from the Pullman Police Department was patrolling Valley Road. He noticed a 2014 Volkswagen Passat driving west with a flat tire on Stadium Way. The driver, unaware of her flat, did not respond when he tried to signal her. As he followed the car, he saw it driving the wrong way in the eastbound lane for about 350 feet. Officer Shellabarger turned on his emergency lights to pull the car over, and it stopped on NE Monroe Street. He then approached the driver, who was identified as 21-year-old Ellie Hansen. After he approached Ellie, he noticed the smell of alcohol. Her eyes were red and watery. There was an open can of Modelo in the car. Officer Shellabarger asked Ellie for her paperwork and explained why he pulled her over. When he inquired if she had been drinking, she admitted to having wine earlier that day. Since he was still in training, he called for backup to conduct the field sobriety tests. Officer Brock Westerman arrived a few minutes later and took over the investigation. Given the signs of possible impairment, Ellie was asked to participate in the field sobriety exercises. Officer Westerman began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noticed that Ellie's eyes did not move smoothly. He observed distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation and saw nystagmus starting before 45 degrees. The second test was the Walk and Turn. Ellie struggled to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line. Instead of taking the instructed nine steps, she took ten. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Ellie couldn't raise her foot correctly and put it down several times. She also failed to count out loud and swayed her arms for balance. After finishing the field sobriety tests, Officer Westerman requested Ellie to take a voluntary breath test. The result showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.212%, which is nearly three times the legal limit. Due to her poor performance on the sobriety tests and the high breath test result, Officer Westerman arrested Ellie for driving under the influence. After placing her in the patrol car, Officer Shellabarger parked her vehicle in a nearby Starbucks lot and drove Ellie to the Pullman Police Department for further processing. At police headquarters, Officer Westerman took charge of processing Ellie since Officer Shellabarger was still learning. He informed Ellie of her Miranda rights and the Implied Consent Warning. She agreed to provide breath samples for testing. The observation period lasted 20 minutes, during which Ellie admitted she had consumed wine earlier. After the breathalyzer test, her Alcotest showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.227%, which was the lowest IR result. After Officer Westerman finished the breathalyzer test, Officer Shellabarger led Ellie to a cell. She waited there briefly before being taken out for her photo and fingerprints. After that, Ellie got her belongings back and was released with a court summons.
