It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At approximately 8:47 PM on March 31, 2024, Sergeant John Fitzgerald of the Roselle Park Police noticed a blue 2005 Chevrolet van going the wrong way on Warren Street. The street is a one-way, heading west, but the van was traveling east. The vehicle soon turned onto Chestnut Street heading south. Sergeant Fitzgerald activated his lights and pulled the van over. He approached and spoke with the driver, who was later identified as Veronica Cajamarca. As soon as she opened the door, Sgt. Fitzgerald smelled alcohol. Inside the vehicle were three other passengers. Officers later found open containers of alcohol in the van. Veronica couldn’t show a valid driver’s license and struggled to find her documents. He then went back to his patrol car and called for backup. Corporal Kot and Patrolman Centeno arrived to help. Once on scene, Veronica was asked to step out and perform field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). Veronica refused to cooperate, so it couldn’t be done. Next was the Walk and Turn test. She failed to touch her heel-to-toe on each step, made a wrong turn, and took too many or too few steps. The last was the One Leg Stand. Veronica didn’t lift her foot correctly and put it down before the test was over. Because of her traffic violations, the smell of alcohol, and her poor performance in the tests, Sgt. Fitzgerald arrested Veronica for drunk driving. The van was towed and held for 12 hours, as required by John’s Law. Veronica was taken to the police station for processing. She kept blaming her sister for what happened that night. At the station, Veronica was read the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to give breath samples. Their breathalyzer machine failed, so she was taken to the nearby Roselle police station for testing. Her results showed a BAC of 0.11%, above the legal limit of 0.08%. She was then taken back to her police station and released to a sober adult after signing a form warning her of potential liability. Sergeant Fitzgerald issued her tickets for DUI, reckless driving, careless driving, wrong-way on a one-way street, and open container. Court records show that on January 2, 2025, Veronica was found guilty of DUI and careless driving. Because of her conviction, she had to use an ignition interlock device for three months. She also spent 12 hours at a resource center for drunk drivers and paid $823 in fines. The other three tickets were dismissed through a plea deal. 0:52 I hear what sounds like bottles of alcohol.
