On January 2, 2025, 29-year-old U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley approached Miami Beach police officers investigating an incident in the 100 block of 9th Street. Kerley expressed concern about his vehicle, which was parked in the middle of an active police scene. Officers instructed Kerley to “go around” the area, but he continued to argue with them. During the exchange, one officer raised a hand to create distance between himself and Kerley, according to the police report. Kerley responded by pushing the officer’s hand away, prompting officers to descend on him, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, an officer punched Kerley in the head multiple times and delivered several elbows to his upper back. Miami Beach authorities stated that Kerley continued to resist arrest despite their attempts to de-escalate the situation. “Our officers attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times,” Miami Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Christopher Bess said during a press conference. “However, unfortunately, the defendant escalated it by using physical force on an officer and was subsequently dealt with accordingly.” Footage from the incident later showed police tasing Kerley before arresting him and taking him to the Miami-Dade County jail. He was charged with battery against an officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. The battery charge is a felony, while the other two charges are misdemeanors. Kerley appeared before a Miami-Dade County judge on Friday afternoon. Initially, he was set to be released from jail on his own recognizance. However, prosecutors filed last-minute charges of strong-arm robbery and domestic battery by strangulation related to a separate incident in May. In that case, Kerley allegedly got violent with his then-wife and took her phone. Kerley’s custody status flagged him in the system, alerting Miami Police and leading to the new charges connected to the summer incident. 0:00 - Summary of events 0:38 - Officer Bodycam 1:02 - Officer punches Kerley 1:50 - Officer deploys his taser 6:21 - What happened next #FredKerley #USOlympian #MiamiBeachPolice #PoliceIncident2025 #FredKerleyArrest #OlympicSprinterArrest #MiamiNews #StrongArmRobbery #DomesticBattery #PoliceStruggle #ResistingArrest #BatteryOnOfficer #MiamiDadeCountyJail #BreakingNews #MiamiBeachCrime #OlympianCharged #FredKerleyNews #AthleteArrested #FloridaCrimeNews Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
