Around 2:44 AM on May 2, 2024, Officer Lauren Barnard with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the intersection of Barnett Shoals Road and Lexington Road on a report of a driver who was asleep at the wheel. She arrived on scene and noticed that a female was asleep behind the wheel of a gray 2014 Lexus IS 250. She awakened the female and asked her to put the car in park. The female, later identified as 21-year-old Lyndsey Mays, subsequently exited the vehicle. As she was speaking with Lyndsey, Officer Barnard detected an odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Lyndsey admitted to consuming 2 drinks earlier that evening. Since Officer Barnard suspected that Lyndsey was impaired, she was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. However, Lyndsey initially refused to perform any field sobriety exercises. However, she eventually did agree to perform the field sobriety exercises. Following the field sobriety exercises, Officer Barnard determined that Lyndsey was impaired. Based on her traffic infractions, the odor of alcohol, her indicators of impairment, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to satisfactorily perform the field sobriety exercises, Lyndsey was placed under arrest for DUI. After placing her under arrest, Officer Barnard read her the Georgia Implied Consent Notice at the scene, and she agreed to submit to a breath test. Lyndsey was first transported to their downtown substation for the administration of the breath test. Officer Cortez stayed behind at the scene until Lyndsey’s vehicle was towed from the scene. Lyndsey’s breath test results indicated a BAC level of 0.217%, which was nearly triple the legal limit of 0.08%. After the breath test was complete, Lyndsey was transported to the Clarke County Jail. She was booked into the Clarke County Jail and issued the following summonses: -DUI (40-6-391(a)(5)) -Obedience to traffic control devices required (40-6-20) -Impeding traffic flow (40-6-184) -Signals required on turning (40-6-123) Lyndsey was eventually released on a $1,883 bond pending her court appearance. On October 8, 2024, Lyndsey pleaded guilty to the charges. As a result of her convictions, Lyndsey was sentenced to 24 hours of confinement, 12 months of probation on 2 counts, and 40 hours of community service. She was also required to pay a total of $1,294 in fines. ----------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting our channel (email us for more information).
