Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At approximately 11:23 PM on March 23, 2022, Sergeant Steven D’Ambola from the Cranford Police Department responded to a report about a vehicle that had left the scene of an accident near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. Upon arriving, he noticed debris at the corner of North Union Avenue and Forest Avenue. Meanwhile, Patrolman Cook discovered a hubcap belonging to a black Nissan SUV at the site. By around 11:56 PM, Sergeant D’Ambola found a black Nissan Rogue parked next to a stop sign at Casino Avenue and Riverside Drive. He got out of his patrol car to examine the vehicle and saw that the passenger side had significant front-end damage. While waiting for a tow truck, he noticed a 33-year-old woman named Colleen walking north on Riverside Drive toward the crash site. She seemed unsteady, and he could smell alcohol on her. When she acknowledged that she had been in an accident about an hour earlier and admitted to driving after drinking, Sergeant D’Ambola started his investigation for driving while intoxicated. Colleen admitted to drinking alcohol about two hours before and told Sergeant D’Ambola that she had not had any more since getting home. She got into the vehicle to find her documents, during which he observed her struggling with the paperwork. Around this time, Patrolman Michael Gamba arrived to conduct field sobriety tests. Patrolman Gamba began the assessment with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noted that there was no smooth eye movement, distinct and sustained nystagmus at the maximum deviation, and the nystagmus started before reaching 45 degrees. He also observed vertical nystagmus in both eyes. Next, he conducted the Walk and Turn test. During this test, Colleen failed to place her heel-to-toe with each step, raised her arms away from her sides, and did not turn correctly. The final test was the One Leg Stand. In this exercise, Colleen showed difficulty maintaining her balance and did not lift her foot properly. Colleen was arrested for driving while intoxicated after a motor vehicle accident. The police noted the smell of alcohol, and Colleen admitted to drinking earlier that evening. She was unable to complete the field sobriety tests. L&J Towing took her vehicle and held it for 12 hours, as required by John’s Law. Patrolman Gamba then took Colleen to the Union County Police Headquarters for further processing. At police headquarters, Colleen was informed about the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to provide breath samples for testing. Sergeant Faulks from the UCPD used the Alcotest machine, and the results showed her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.25%, which is more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%. After giving her breath samples, Colleen was taken to the Cranford Police Department and later released to her mother at 2:41 AM, after her mother signed the Potential Liability Warning form for her. Colleen received several summonses, including operating under the influence, improper parking near a stop sign, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and not keeping traffic within marked lanes.
