A May 2022 evening saw a patrolman observe a vehicle traveling at 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Route 15 North, necessitating assistance from another officer to safely initiate a stop at the 14-mile marker. As officers engaged the driver, an odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected, prompting further inquiry. The driver admitted to consuming two glasses of wine earlier and disclosed she was pregnant, adding a layer of complexity to the roadside interaction. Consenting to standardized field sobriety exercises, she exhibited several indicators of impairment, struggling with balance and coordination during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests. Consequently, the driver was placed under arrest for operating under the influence. At police headquarters, she was read her Miranda Rights and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators before providing breath samples, which registered a blood alcohol content of 0.14%. Her husband, who also admitted to consuming alcohol, was transported to headquarters by another officer.
