-Phoenix, AZ. -July 01, 2023. This incident occurred at a local business in the area of 3200 East Washington Street when Phoenix Police received an emergency call of a burglary in progress. Details on the call described a man and a woman forcing their way into a walk-in gate to the business. Dispatchers learned that the original caller gave an incorrect address on the west side of Phoenix. The call was then re-dispatched to the address near 3200 East Washington Street. The dispatcher relayed more information about the call to the responding officers. When the first two officers arrived, they contacted a man and woman matching the descriptions in the call. During the investigation into the burglary, one officer returned to his patrol car to run a record check on the two while the second officer stayed with them. The officer who ran the records check was unable to confirm the identity of the man and attempted to handcuff him. The man resisted and began to struggle with officers. While struggling to handcuff the man, one officer suffered serious injuries to his head and leg. As the man continued to resist, he grabbed the officer's taser. The man was ordered let go of the taser. It was at this time the officer involved shooting occurred. Following the shooting, officers rendered aid to the man and carried him to Phoenix Fire personnel who then took him to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Both officers were treated for injuries at the hospital. One received minor injuries and the other officer received serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The officer involved in this incident is assigned to the Mountain View Precinct and has 4 years of service with the department. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is currently underway, in addition to a criminal investigation. Once the criminal investigation is complete it will then be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
