Police Bodycam Sebring, Florida — On the afternoon of April 19, 2025, deputies were called to the Spring Lake Market after store staff reported a theft involving a man later identified as 39-year-old Richard Christopher Smith of Miami. Employees said Smith had taken several items, including alcoholic beverages, and left the store without paying. While deputies were en route, dispatch received additional information that the suspect was driving a black minivan and repeatedly circling the parking lot in a suspicious manner. When deputies arrived and attempted to make contact, Smith accelerated away, leading officers on a pursuit that continued several miles through the area. During the chase, Smith engaged in unusual behavior, at one point extending a can of Ketel One vodka spritz out the driver’s window as he passed a deputy attempting to stop him. According to deputies, Smith appeared to make a remark suggesting he was offering a drink as he continued driving. The pursuit came to an end near the Sebring Airport after deputies deployed spike strips, flattening all four tires of the minivan. Even after losing control of the vehicle, Smith allegedly attempted to strike two marked patrol units before coming to a stop in a nearby business parking lot. Following the crash, Smith was taken into custody after deputies used a Taser to subdue him. No deputies were seriously injured during the incident. Smith was booked on multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a DUI test, and petit theft.
