On March 1, 2025, Whitman County Deputy Petersen observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 19-year-old woman. She didn't realize that she was being pulled over and attempted to enter the drive thru line at Taco Bell. Deputy Petersen exited his patrol vehicle and made contact with the woman. He told her to exit the drive thru line and pull her vehicle into a nearby parking spot. The woman initially claimed she had consumed no alcohol, but after Deputy Petersen performed a modified Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test while she remained seated in her vehicle, she then admitted to drinking one seltzer approximately 5 hours prior. She was then asked to perform the full series of standardized field sobriety tests, which included submitting to a portable breath test (PBT). The result of the PBT was 0.154% BAC, more than 7 times the legal limit for a person under 21 years of age. She was placed under arrest and transported to the Pullman Police Station for an evidential breath test (EBT). The result of the EBT was 0.137% BAC. She was then transported to the Whitman County Jail. She was charged with a single count of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). The outcome of her case is discussed at the end of the video.
