On October 5th, 2023, at approximately 1:50 a.m., police officers in O’Fallon, Illinois were dispatched to a residential area following reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a ditch. Upon arrival, officers encountered a woman—later identified as Hazel—who was disoriented, agitated, and appeared to be intoxicated. As the officers approached, the situation quickly escalated from a routine traffic stop to a tense encounter involving a minor in the vehicle. When asked if the car was hers, Hazel confirmed it was. Officers immediately noticed her slurred speech, unsteady movements, and evasive responses. She repeatedly avoided answering simple questions, such as her name, where she lived, and how her vehicle had ended up in the ditch. At one point, she admitted to having no form of identification on her and initially refused to confirm her identity. She asked the officers multiple times to turn off their flashlights and seemed increasingly frustrated and disoriented. What concerned the officers most was the discovery that Hazel’s young daughter was in the vehicle with her. When questioned further, Hazel mentioned they were currently living at an extended stay hotel after their house had burned down earlier in the week. She eventually admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, stating she had consumed "a couple of shots," although officers suspected she had far more. As the officers tried to perform a field sobriety test, Hazel grew increasingly emotional and resistant. She stumbled, raised her voice, and at times refused to follow instructions. She pleaded with the officers not to arrest her in front of her daughter, asking repeatedly, “Please don’t let her see.” Despite multiple chances to cooperate, Hazel’s behavior became more erratic, and officers were ultimately forced to take her into custody.
