A white 2017 Mercedes GLE had struck a pole on Mitchell Place near Oakes Road. Sergeant Stephen Scherer reached the scene shortly after 10:51 PM. The Mercedes had heavy front-end damage, and its airbags had deployed. Nearby residents told him the driver had fled. Patrolman Andrew White searched the surrounding streets for the driver. He found her outside a home on Rumson Road. Sergeant Scherer arrived as White spoke with the woman, who identified herself as Melissa. She said she was going through a divorce and had spent the evening with a friend. Melissa denied drinking after the crash but admitted she had consumed alcohol earlier. Concerned that she might be impaired, the officers asked her to perform field sobriety tests. Sergeant Scherer first gave Melissa the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN, test. Patrolman White then conducted the Walk and Turn Test. Melissa struggled, failing to touch heel-to-toe and making an improper turn. During the One Leg Stand, she could not keep her foot raised and put it down before the test ended. Police arrested Melissa after she admitted driving the Mercedes and drinking earlier. Her field sobriety test results were also unsatisfactory. The vehicle was impounded for twelve hours under John's Law, and Patrolman White brought Melissa to the Little Silver Police Department for processing. There, officers read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she agreed to provide breath samples. The Alcotest showed a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, twice the legal limit of 0.08%. After processing, police released Melissa to a sober adult who signed her Potential Liability Warning.
