On the night of January 4, 2025, LMPD officers located 33-year-old Austin Schepers in the backyard of a home in the Jacobs neighborhood. Schepers was wanted in connection with the shooting of an Orange County sheriff's deputy in Southern Indiana. Aerial footage captured Schepers waving a gun near an alley behind a Wheeler Avenue residence. He then opened fire on officers. In response, LMPD officers and three U.S. Marshals fired back, fatally wounding him. After firing multiple shots, officers took time to retrieve shields and cautiously approached Schepers. When they reached him, he was unresponsive. "We need EMS over here," one first responder is heard saying in body camera footage. Another first responder motioned across his neck, saying, "He’s…” before trailing off. Schepers was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered a handgun and methamphetamines from the area. Authorities in Indiana had been searching for Schepers since the previous day. He was accused of shooting Deputy Zach Andry, who had stopped to assist a vehicle he believed was disabled. Andry was transported to UofL Health in downtown Louisville, where he remains in critical condition. 0:00 - Drone footage 2:04 - Shooting view from drone 2:30 - Officer Trumbo bodycam 3:19 - Shooting view from officer 6:46 - Officer Dykes bodycam 11:10 - Officer Derby bodycam 15:17 - Officer Ross bodycam #LouisvilleMetroPolice #Fugitive #Shootout #LMPD #SouthernIndiana #DeputyShooting #AustinSchepers #JacobsNeighborhood #WheelerAvenue #USMarshals #CriticalCondition #LawEnforcement #BreakingNews #PoliceIncident #GunViolence #Methamphetamine Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
